Selling Secrets
Selling items at auctions is a fun way to bring in extra income and reduce
clutter in your home. If you like to peruse yard sales and thrift stores,
you can add even more to your income. Most of the time, you'll get more
for an item up for auction than you would selling it at a yard sale. Sometimes
it is very surprising and exciting to see how much you get for an item!
To be a successful seller on an auction 3 types of products sell well:
- Consumables: items a person will buy and use up then buy again
- Information Products: something you can download or receive on a
floppy disc or CD Rom
- Collectibles: stamps, coins etc.
To gain confidence as a seller begin by selling a few unwanted items
from around your house.
Stay focused by using either uBid or eBay. There are lots of other online
auction sites but they're usually much smaller than uBid and eBay. That
means you'll get less bidders and they are taken less seriously by buyers.
You may have success at other auction sites but ebay is definitely the
essential online auction site to use.
As a seller focus on being trustworthy and responsive. Most auctions
have a buyer and seller rating system and its vital to be rated well if
you want to be successful. Obtain a high rating by:
- Responding to email queries quickly
- Describe your products accurately
- Contact buyers speedily after the auction
- Despatch items quickly
- Wrap them carefully - newspaper makes good cheap packaging
- Offer as many payment options as possible - Paypal, C2it, Billpoint
(eBay's own payment system), personal check, cash or money order
- Don't overcharge for post and packing! Buyers are very sensitive to
this area and will post negative feedback if you overcharge
- Be prepared to go the extra mile to provide your buyers with excellent
service

Auction Tip
When you're writing the description
for your ad, make sure you mention anything and everything that
a potential bidder might need to know. Note any defects or imperfections
of the item. Include your desired payment terms and your preferred
shipping methods. If the object is graded or evaluated in any way,
include that assessment in your description. In other words, include
everything you can think of that will eliminate any surprises for
the buyer.
